Antique of the Week: Voruz de Vaux Cabinets

The cabinets are available at Hollis & Knight.

As everyone in Kensington knows, Antique Row is one of the community’s points of pride.  Howard Avenue and its side streets are lined with shops specializing in antique furniture, rugs, vintage toys, used books and more.  This large presence in the community sparked our feature, Antique of the Week, where we will showcase a different item or curiosity each week to bring attention to pieces from the past.

This week, we’re featuring an antique pair of Voruz de Vaux cabinets, circa 1920, available at .

“Baron Maruice Voruz de Vaux was a renowned designer of the social elite,” said a Hollis & Knight representative. “He worked primarily for the Duponts and sold his work to the Winterthur estate in Wilmington, Delaware.” The baron’s shop was located on 635 Park Avenue in New York City.

The Winterthur estate belonged to Henry Francis DuPont, a horticulturist and art collector.  It houses about 90,000 American objects, “made or used between 1640 and 1860,” according to its website.

The cabinets are “original chocolate brown painted finish backed with silver leaf,” according to Hollis & Knight. The dimensions are 64.5 inches by 18 inches by 109 inches.
