With Costco set to open in April, the mall in Wheaton will soon see an influx of new businesses like Chipotle and Mayorga Coffee. In with the new, and out with the old--Old Navy in this case. The clothing store, which opened at Westfield Wheaton in 2003, declined to renew its lease and left the mall at the end of January, according to Matt Barry, the mall's general manager. Papaya, which markets women's clothing to teenagers and young adults, has signed with the mall to take over part of the empty space across from the mall's food court on the upper level, Barry said. The mall also lost Easy Spirit and Bakers Shoes at the end of January when their leases ended.

The Costco at Westfield Wheaton will open a few days earlier than planned this spring.
The Costco in Wheaton has a new opening date, according to a spokeswoman for Costco: April 10. This Wednesday opening date is a few days earlier than the one Costco announced at the end of January. Costco's originally scheduled October 2012 opening at the mall in Wheaton was delayed because of unspecified construction issues. Westfield Wheaton has announced extended hours in the days leading up to Christmas. The mall will be open 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 20, and 8 a.m. to midnight Dec. 21-23 (Friday-Sunday). On Christmas Eve, the mall will open even earlier, at 7 a.m., but will also close early, at 8 p.m. Stores are closed on Christmas Day, which is a Tuesday. New businesses at Westfield Wheaton: one has already opened, the other two are on their way.
Wheaton Mall, Wheaton Plaza, Westfield Wheaton--whatever it is that you call it, there's no denying that the shopping center plays a key role in Wheaton's business scene. Here's a "Mall Watch" update from Patch for early December: - Crazy 8, a clothing store for young children and babies, opened the Wednesday before Thanksgiving on the upper level near the food court. - Teavana, an upscale tea store, has not yet opened, although its projected opening timeframe was late fall 2012. - Auntie Anne's, the pretzel staple of malls around America, still bears a "Coming in Fall 2012" sign, despite the fact that it's now December. Target in Westfield Wheaton is opening at 9 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day. This is the earliest that the nationwide chain has ever opened its stores for Black Friday shopping. Around the country, some Target employees and their family members are protesting the "Thanksgiving Creep" and have started petitions online, asking the store to return to a Friday morning opening time. The rest of the mall stores in Westfield Wheaton will be opening at midnight. This is the second year that Westfield has scheduled a midnight opening. Westfield Wheaton announced that mall stores and restaurants will reopen Tuesday at 11 a.m.

Want an autograph from the Washington Redskins' Brian Orakpo? He will be at the grand opening celebration for Dick's Sporting Goods at Westfield Wheaton on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Westfield has these instructions for autograph seekers: Beginning at 8 a.m. on Saturday, 300 wristbands will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis at Dick's Sporting Goods. There is a limit of one wristband and one autograph per person. Fans must have a wristband and must be in the "special appearance" line by 11 a.m. to receive an autograph. With the incoming Costco and the recently arrived Dick's Sporting Goods, Westfield Wheaton is attracting new retail and restaurants--like Chipotle.
Have you been to the mall in Wheaton recently? Step inside the new Costco wing around the back, and you'll find lots of "coming soon" signs. Patch spoke with Westfield Wheaton's marketing director, Sidney Woods, about when these stores and restaurants are expected to open. Woods said that those expected to open later this year include Mayorga Coffee, All Cell and Classic Diamond Jewelers.
