MoCo Food Trucks Park It, Online

A collection of food trucks in Montgomery County organized a collective website, www.mocofoodtrucks.com.

The grown-up lunch line is just as likely to be outside, on the corner of a busy intersection as it is inside of a strip mall restaurant. (And it's been that way for years now.) And while residents and workers in places lousy with food trucks may enjoy the variety and speed of mobile food offerings, keeping up with what's available and when can be a challenge.  A new website, www.mocofoodtrucks.com, organizes about a dozen food trucks within the county and includes a comprehensive calendar of when some of the trucks will be in which area.  Here's how the organizers describe the site: "This site will tell you the three "Ws" of food trucks: Where we are, Who we are and What we serve. Our trucks operate throughout Montgomery County, MD from …

Foodie News: Zen Tara Tea, Ri Ra Irish Pub to Close

Restaurant news from around Montgomery County and adjacent Washington, DC, neighborhoods.

Get caught up with the food scene in Montgomery County and adjacent Washington, DC, neighborhoods with 1 Meat, 3 Sides. This week, the closure of two popular Bethesda businesses takes center plate. One meat: Bethesda tea shop Zen Tara Tea is shutting down operations later this month, citing the sluggish economy, disruptive construction nearby and the loss of nearby parking as the main reasons for closing up shop, Bethesda-Chevy Chase Patch reported. Nearby, Ri Ra, an Irish pub in downtown Bethesda, will close in early September. "The popular gathering spot, which opened 10 years ago, is not renewing its lease, confirmed bar manager Paul Corey," Bethesda Magazine reported.  Three sides: The popular Korean food truck Seoul Food DC will …

Voltaggio's Lunchbox to Join Range in Chevy Chase Pavilion

Lunchbox will be the third eatery in the Chevy Chase Pavilion with a menu by celebrity chef Bryan Voltaggio.

The newly-renovated Chevy Chase Pavilion is set to get a third eatery with a menu by celebrity chef Bryan Voltaggio, who will open a second location of Lunchbox—a popular sandwich shop in Frederick, MD—in the Chevy Chase shopping center later this year, Washingtonian reported. "Lunchbox takes the fresh, seasonal ingredients ... and transforms them into gourmet sandwiches, salads, soups and desserts," the restaurant's website states. The Frederick location is a "casual dining venue [that] seats 30 people comfortably for lunch only," and restaurant patrons may dine in or carry out. Menu options include grilled cheese, pastrami and meatloaf sandwiches, a variety of salads and soups, cookies and brownies. Lunchbox will join Voltaggio's other …

Le Pain Quotidien Could Replace Tynan, PoPville Reports

PoPville, citing "a good source," reported that the shuttered Friendship Heights coffee and tea shop could become Le Pain Quotidien.

The former storefront of Tynan Coffee and Tea in Friendship Heights could become home to a branch of Le Pain Quotidien, Prince of Petworth reported on PoPville, citing "a good source." Tynan Coffee and Tea recently closed, Chevy Chase Patch reported. Its storefront anchored the southern arm of the plaza at The Shops at Wisconsin Place. Next door is the former storefront for Adolfo Dominguez, a clothing boutique. Patch readers made several great suggestions as to what might work well in the empty space. Suggestions included: an ethnic and/or mid-price-range restaurant, a craft beer or cocktail bar and an ice cream parlor.  What would you like to see in the old Tynan space in Friendship Heights? Tell us in the comments.

Range Now Serving Lunch

Bryan Voltaggio's Chevy Chase restaurant now serves lunch as well as dinner, seven days a week, but reservations still are recommended for both meals.

Range isn't just a dinner destination anymore. Starting this week, Range—celebrity chef Bryan Voltaggio's new restaurant, which opened in the Chevy Chase Pavilion last December—is open for lunch, too. Reservations still are recommended, and may be made online at www.voltrange.com or by calling Range at 202-803-8020, according to a restaurant news statement. The lunch menu is mostly the same as the dinner menu, with the addition of a burger and a $30 set-price lunch option, according to the restaurant.  Range now is open Sundays through Thursdays, from 11:30 a.m. to 10:30 p.m., and Fridays and Saturdays, from 11:30 a.m. to 11 p.m., at the newly renovated Chevy Chase Pavilion (5335 Wisconsin Ave. NW, Washington, DC). Range's menu is meat-…

Persimmon Re-Opens on Wisconsin

The long-awaited re-incarnation of the Bethesda restaurant is complete, Bethesda Magazine reports.

Wisconsin Avenue mainstay Persimmon has re-opened after a renovation, Bethesda Magazine reports. Chef and owner Damian Salvatore shuttered the restaurant in July to transform the eatery into a "casual, neighborhood bistro" modeled after Wild Tomato, Salvatore's restaurant in Cabin John, according to Bethesda Magazine. The new Persimmon boasts a brighter look and new menu items with lower prices, according to the report, but Salvatore still will serve up his signature pecan-crusted barbecue lamb. Read the full story at Bethesda Magazine's website.

I have loved Persimmon for years. It was one of Phyllis Richman's favorites, and rightly so. I am sorry to hear that they are making it more like Wild Tomato. I was very eager for Wild Tomato to open as this part of the county is a restaurant wasteland and I assumed that a restaurant owned by the people who own Persimmon would be terrific. It is just OK. Too many tables crammed into the space, …   more ›

Civil Cigar Lounge Booms—and Puffs—With Business

Chevy Chase Pavilion's new cigar lounge is 'surprisingly diverse,' Eater DC reported.

Chevy Chase's new cigar lounge—the Civil Cigar Lounge, inside the recently remodeled Chevy Chase Pavilion—is up and running, and the clientele has turned out to be "surprisingly diverse," Eater DC reported. "On any given night, we're averaging 35 percent, 40 percent women," co-owner Matt Krimm told Eater DC, so it's a far cry from being a stodgy men's club, which might be more stereotypical for a cigar lounge. The 93-seat lounge opened on Jan. 14 and features a full bar serving top-shelf whiskies, scotches and unique cocktails, Chevy Chase Patch reported last month. The lounge has lengthy menus for cigars, wines, spirits and food. Edibles are prepared in the kitchen of neighboring restaurant Range, celebrity chef Bryan Voltaggio's latest …

I like what they are trying to do and will be a patron but the seating is very uncomfortable in the lounge area. they sit way too upright. I would have expected more comfortable chairs and couches. It feels like money was spent on everything else and they tried to do the seating on the cheap. great atmosphere, but also needs to lower the lighting some.   more ›

A New Chef and an Opening Date for Blues & Jazz Supper Club

The supper club in the former Bethesda Theatre space will open March 1, Bethesda Magazine reports.

The supper club that's set to take over the former Bethesda Theatre space will debut in March, and a new chef will be heading up the kitchen when the doors open, Bethesda Magazine reports. The Bethesda Blues & Jazz Supper Club will open its doors March 1, according to the report. Owners have brought in Chef Scott Mullen, who was named by Philadelphia Magazine as one of the city’s “Top 25 Up and Coming Chefs” when he cooked in upscale kitchens there. Mullen will still serve up the Louisiana cuisine that was part of the original vision for the supper club, but will also include shrimp scampi, prime rib and crab cakes on his menu, according to the report. Read the full report at Bethesda Magazine. Following a $1.5 million renovation, the …
