Tuesday's Metrorail fire caused commuters to sound off on Twitter.
Metro troubles reared their ugly head again on Tuesday as a track fire on the Red Line in Silver Spring caused significant delays during evening rush hour. New information released about investigation into the fire beneath a Red Line rail car Tuesday evening at the Silver Spring Metro station.
Metro investigators said Wednesday that they do not yet know the root cause of the fire that led to the evacuation of the Silver Spring Metro station Tuesday evening, but that they have ruled out the track conditions and are focusing instead on the Red Line rail car involved. Metro said it reported the fire under the rail car shortly after 6 p.m. Smoke billowed over downtown Silver Spring, but no one was injured, and firefighters brought it under control quickly. According to Metro, the rail car is a 1000-series car that is the oldest type in the fleet and scheduled for retirement with the arrival of the new 7000-series rail cars next year. Silver Line appears on new map, but when might the Purple Line appear?
The Maryland Transit Authority has scheduled a series of five open houses to update citizens on the status of the much-discussed Purple Line, according to a Washington Post story. The Purple Line is a proposed light rail extension of the current Metro system and would run for 16 miles between Bethesda and New Carrollton, and connect with the existing Red, Orange and Green Lines. Among issues that have been discussed is how the line’s construction would be funded. A February Post article stated that for Maryland to receive federal funding, the state must demonstrate that it can pay its half ($2.15 billion) of the costs. This weekend's rebuilding work will result in service changes on the Red, Orange, Blue and Yellow lines. Green Line trains will operate normally between Greenbelt and Branch Avenue. Additionally, Metrorail will open at 5 a.m. Sunday, two hours early, to accommodate the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure. The County Council president tweeted a letter from the council to County Executive Leggett.
The Silver Spring Transit Center has become a $120 million headache for Montgomery County taxpayers. When the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority told the county it would not operate the transit center as planned, the pain got worse. County Council President Nancy Navarro (D-Dist. 4) of Silver Spring tweeted on Friday, referencing WMATA's decision and including a link to a letter the council sent to County Executive Isiah Leggett (D) on the topic. The letter requested that Leggett appear before the council Wednesday to discuss the ramifications of WMATA's decision.
Metro will open at 5 a.m. on Sunday for the Nike Women Half Marathon.
Free shuttle buses will replace Red Line trains this weekend between the NoMa-Gallaudet and Takoma stations, according to a Metro news statement. The weekend track work schedule picks up again this weekend.
Metro's track work-free weekends of cherry blossom time are over. This weekend—from 10 p.m. on Friday, April 19, through closing on Sunday, April 21—Red Line trains will be replaced by free shuttle buses between Gallery Place and Union Station "as workers install 600 feet of new lighting fixtures between the tracks at Judiciary Square Station. ... Rail service must be suspended because the light fixtures are located within inches of both third rails," Metro reported on its website. After explosions at Boston Marathon, WMATA takes extra security measures.
Metro Transit Police day shift officers are being held on duty until further notice, running extra security patrols of the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority bus and rail systems through rush hour, according to WMATA's official Twitter account. The news comes in the wake of two explosions which occurred as runners were crossing the finish line at the Boston Marathon. Boston Police have told the Associated Press that there were three people killed and at least 22 injuries as a result of the explosion. Metro says system-wide capability not possible until 2015, but the Congressional deadline is Sept. 30 of this year.
Metro got a break this week on its congressional deadline to install cellphone service system-wide; a continuing resolution pushed the due date from March 30 to Sept. 30, The Washington Examiner reports. But don't get your hopes up. Metro has said system-wide service will not happen until December 2015. Metro is supposed to offer cell phone service throughout the transit system--one of the requirements to continue receiving $150 million in federal funding each year. Metro's 20 busiest stations were wired for internet service in 2009, but many tunnels between stations and many stations still do not have cell phone or internet service capabilities.
