Allure is one of the new businesses opening at the mall near the Costco.

It's prom season, and a new formal dress store has opened in the Westfield Wheaton mall. Allure sells accessories and dresses for proms, quinceñeras and other formal occasions. Most dresses are in the $100-300 price range, but luxury name-brand dresses can cost up to $1,000. Owner Dan Bishel prides himself on customer service, and the store also offers alterations. The store is really nice and has lots of products that other Costcos don't have. The preview on the 9th was very nice and the opening on the 10th was great. It's so nice to be only 5 minutes away instead of the half an hour or more it took to get to the other stores. And I'll still shop often at Giant and Safeway, because Costco has a limited product line. Surprisingly, there weren't a lot of …   more ›

Choice Wine & Beer Opens Near Costco in Wheaton Mall

Choice Wine & Beer opened Tuesday.

Silver Spring resident Kirti Patel already has a business presence in Wheaton: He owns the Quiznos across from the Giant at Westfield Wheaton. But now he's expanded, with a new wine and beer store that opened Tuesday night in the Costco wing of the Wheaton mall. "I thought this was a good opportunity, with Costco opening nearby," Patel said. Patel's goal with Choice Wine & Beer (not to be confused with the Choice Beer & Wine in Rockville) is to create a "nice, clean, and safe environment" where customers can purchase alcohol, he said. Patel is still expanding his selection, but the wine ranges in price from $6 to $50, he said. The store will be open during mall hours: 10 a.m. - 9:30 p.m. from Monday to Saturday, and 11 a.m. - 7 p.m. on …

It's because (1) we live in a nanny-state/county that thinks only it can effectively control the sale of liquor, and (2) state legislators are bought-and-paid-for by the alcohol distributor lobby.   more ›

Mall Watch: Old Navy Leaves Westfield Wheaton

Find out which store will be taking over Old Navy's spot opposite the mall's food court.

With Costco set to open in April, the mall in Wheaton will soon see an influx of new businesses like Chipotle and Mayorga Coffee. In with the new, and out with the old--Old Navy in this case. The clothing store, which opened at Westfield Wheaton in 2003, declined to renew its lease and left the mall at the end of January, according to Matt Barry, the mall's general manager. Papaya, which markets women's clothing to teenagers and young adults, has signed with the mall to take over part of the empty space across from the mall's food court on the upper level, Barry said. The mall also lost Easy Spirit and Bakers Shoes at the end of January when their leases ended.

Mall Watch: Teavana, Auntie Anne's, Crazy 8

New businesses at Westfield Wheaton: one has already opened, the other two are on their way.

Wheaton Mall, Wheaton Plaza, Westfield Wheaton--whatever it is that you call it, there's no denying that the shopping center plays a key role in Wheaton's business scene. Here's a "Mall Watch" update from Patch for early December: - Crazy 8, a clothing store for young children and babies, opened the Wednesday before Thanksgiving on the upper level near the food court. - Teavana, an upscale tea store, has not yet opened, although its projected opening timeframe was late fall 2012. - Auntie Anne's, the pretzel staple of malls around America, still bears a "Coming in Fall 2012" sign, despite the fact that it's now December.   What changes have you seen at the mall lately? Tell us in the comments and upload any pictures to our Pics & Clips …
