After an extensive re-model, Potomac's California Tortilla is boasting a modernized interior.
Nothing says love like burritos. And just in time for Valentine's Day, the California Tortilla in the Cabin John Shopping Center is re-opening with a brand-new look. The Potomac location has undergone an extensive re-model to upgrade the shop's interior. The "Cal-Mex" eatery now boasts a new color palette to match the cool green tones of CalTort's new logo. The re-design comes on the heels of the move and re-model of downtown Bethesda' California Tortilla, which re-opened with the updated look on Cordell Avenue last fall. The chain is in the process of a re-branding effort, and the new look is planned for all of the chain's locations, owner Pam Felix told Patch last year. The Cabin John location has been outfitted with new seating and new …

Nineteenth-century love letters and modern sweet tweets prove that communication for couples is timeless.
By Allison Goldstein, Capital News Service When U.S. Navy Surgeon David Shelton Edwards was serving at the Washington Navy Yard in the late 1830s, he kept the spark in his marriage alive by writing eight love letters home to his wife, Harriet Eliza Henry. "Your letters are a sweet cordial to this loving heart of yours, for there can be no substitute for them until I have your own dear self here," Edwards wrote in a July 1835 note to Henry. Over a 13-year span from 1835 to 1848 working in Washington, Pensacola Navy Yard, FL, and aboard several Mexican-American War naval vessels, Edwards wrote his “dearest Eliza” more than 40 notes now part of the National Postal Museum’s collection of thousands of letters in Washington. Today, Skype and …

The town hall played host to quite the Valentine's Day party this week, as children's entertainer the Great Zucchini donated his services to brighten the day for some special-needs kids. More than 45 people showed up to the event, organized by Kensington resident Barrie Carr. Among them were County Council Phil Andrews and Del. Al Carr, Barrie's husband. Barrie Carr said special-needs children are often picked last for teams and left out of playdates, and Tuesday's event was a chance for them to have some fun and hang out together.

I was amazed the first time my oldest child’s preschool teachers sent home a list of names, with instructions for my kid to give each child in the class a Valentine. Really? A child who has to be told to wipe his nose is old enough for romance? Never mind that St. Valentine apparently was no romantic. He was apparently beheaded for refusing to abandon Christianity, so maybe we could make puns about how lovers also lose their heads. (Or, not.) Valentine’s Day is a time for people who are old enough to make mad, passionate love (or at least neck) to give cards to their beloveds, drink wine, stare deeply into each other’s eyes, eat luscious food and then retire to the bedroom (for those old enough) to either make babies or just have a rockin…

Just in time for Valentine's Day, Brian Ganz will perform an all-Chopin concert at the Music Center at Strathmore on Saturday, Feb. 11, at 8 p.m.
Just in time for Valentine's Day, pianist Brian Ganz returns to the Music Center at Strathmore on Friday, Feb. 8, for the second performance of his ambitious "Extreme Chopin" quest to perform all of Frédéric Chopin’s piano music in front of live audiences. Although Ganz is still researching whether or not another pianist has ever performed all of Chopin's approximately 250 piano pieces, "the important thing is not whether I’m the first to do this," Ganz said in a statement. Rather, "I’m excited to share works with Chopin lovers that they may never have heard before." “There are so many beloved works of great beauty and emotional power, but there are also quite a few buried treasures that deserve to be heard," he added. “Chopin’s music is …
