Video: Strathmore Rallies Ukulele Players for Guinness World Record

Strathmore's largest ukulele ensemble fell short of the world record.

Ukulele enthusiasts from around the area gathered at Strathmore's outdoor concert last night in hopes of breaking the world record for largest ukulele ensemble. By the end of the night, Strathmore counted 944 registered players, beating the previous record set in 2009 of 851 uke players playing in unison. Unfortunately, the large group fell short. According to the Guinness website, the new world record was set just a few days ago on Aug. 20 in Helsingborg, Sweden with 1,547 players performing during a single event. Local two-time Grammy-winners Cathy Fink and Marcy Marxer emceed the Ukefest along with performances by Victoria Vox, Gerald Ross and former Strathmore Artists in Residence The Sweater Set.

Photos: A Whole Host of Ukuleles at Strathmore

Pending approval from Guinness, Ukefest set a world record last night.

More than 1,000 people turned out to Strathmore last night for Ukefest, at once a celebration of the stringed instrument and an attempt to set a world record. According to Strathmore's count, 944 people strummed their ukes in unison, which is nearly 100 more than the previous world-record-holders. Cathy Fink, one of the event's organizers and performers, said they'll need to wait for word from the Guinness Book of World Records before the feat is official. Stayed tuned to Kensington Patch, as we'll be posting a video of the strum-along later today.

Strum Your Way to a World Record

Tonight's Ukefest at Strathmore is your chance to get into Guinness.

Back in 2009, 851 Londoners played the ukulele in unison, setting a world record. Now, Strathmore is out to shatter that record with tonight's Ukefest, and they'll need your help to get into the Guinness Book of World Records. Starting at 6 p.m., you can register for the event and brush up on your uke skills. Then, at 7:30 p.m., the festival starts, and a host of musicians will perform ukulele tunes to which you can strum along. If you don't have a uke of your own, you can buy one at the concert, and if you're less than confident in your strumming skills, Marcy Maxer, of Grammy-winning local duo Cathy and Marcy, will show you the ropes in this video. Parking will be available at Strathmore and at the Grosvenor-Strathmore Metro Station lot.

Photo Gallery: Deconstructing Strathmore's Past

A Rockville artist-in-residence focuses on a grotto with a foundation in the arts center's history.

Fascinated by the forgotten history of the campus, during a six-month residency at Strathmore, Minna Philips, of Rockville, created an installation of a grotto for the exhibit at the Mansion at Strathmore. The Strathmore Fine Artists in Residence program provides local artists with the opportunity to develop an audience in the Washington, DC metropolitan area while refining their technique under the guidance of an established professional artist mentor. Artists also may partake in Strathmore's extensive visual arts programming and debut their work in a group show …
