Holidays 2012: Recycle Lights, Phones and Coats; Donate New Toys

Do you have items you no longer need? A number of holiday collections are underway and items can be easily donated at one location. Find out more!

Are you buying a new winter jacket? Do you have holiday lights that no longer work? Did your kids get duplicate toys this year? Did Santa bring you a new cell phone? If you have items you’d like to toss but aren’t sure what to do with them, a number of collections are taking place in Montgomery County and items can be dropped off right at the Salvation Army at 18705 North Frederick Avenue in Gaithersburg, MD. You can also drop off items at Goodwill of Greater Washington at 619 South Frederick Avenue in Gaithersburg or 4816 Boiling Brook Parkway in Rockville.  Have any unwrapped, unused toys? Salvation Army Seeking Last-Minute Donations

The Salvation Army needs to fundraise $350,000 before Friday night to meet its initial Red Kettle campaign goal of $1.6 million.

Reports to be released tomorrow are expected to show a $350,000 shortfall in donations for the Salvation Army's Red Kettle campaign, according to Maj. Steve Morris of The Salvation Army National Capital Area Command. The National Capital Area Command, headquartered in Germantown, had a $1.6 million target. Throughout the  campaign, which ran from Nov. 12 to Dec. 24, the organization has reported lower-than-usual donations. As of Dec. 21, the Salvation Army reported a 40 percent decline in donations to the Red Kettle campaign in Montgomery County. At this point the organization would be happy to reach last year's $1.35 million in donations, said Ken Forsythe, a Salvation Army spokesman. The organization has seen a slight increase in service…
