Chief Bowers Leaving Montgomery County for Fairfax County Job

Montgomery County Fire & Rescue Chief Richard R. Bowers Jr. was named fire chief for Fairfax County, VA. The appointment is effective April 29.

Montgomery County Fire & Rescue Chief Richard R. Bowers Jr. will be leaving his post to take over as fire chief in Fairfax County, VA. Bowers is a 35-year veteran of MCFRS and has served as Montgomery County's fire chief since 2008. Bowers takes over for Ronald Mastin, who plans to retire from the Fairfax County Fire Department on May 7. The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors made the appointment on Tuesday. The appointment is effective April 29. “I think the most important thing is that I’m their fire chief,” Bowers said, referring to Fairfax County residents. “We’re going to use every available means to get the word out about safety and prevention.” In Fairfax County, Bowers will oversee nearly 1,400 uniformed men and women and 180 …

Montgomery County: 'Back To Normal Operations'

Montgomery County Executive Ike Leggett says the county was spared significant damage from Hurricane Sandy.

Montgomery County Executive Ike Leggett said the county was spared significant damage from Hurricane Sandy and the county's emergency operations and shelters would come to a close at 5 p.m. Tuesday. "News for us today is we're going back to normal operations," Leggett said from the Montgomery County Emergency Operations Center in Gaithersburg. "We fared very well compared to other locations." Approximately 10,000 Pepco customers remain without power, with numbers nearing 23,000 at the height of the storm. "Compared to previous events, that's significantly lower," Leggett said.
