Check out an animation of the restaurant, which will feature a roof deck and two upscale dining rooms and could be open by July.

The restaurant planned to take over the second floor and roof deck of a new Woodmont Triangle commercial building has been dubbed “Roof,” and it could be open by July. “What we’re trying to accomplish is a nice rooftop dining atmosphere that transitions into a happening night spot in the evenings,” Tommy Joe’s owner Alan Pohoryles, who is behind the new restaurant, told Patch. Renovations and additions to an existing commercial building at Norfolk and Cordell avenues are underway. Check out an animation of the concept for the new space via Steven J. Karr, AIA Inc. Following its opening – sometime between the middle of July and the beginning of August – the bar and eatery will be open for dinner for the first few weeks, and then will open …

Haandi Re-Opens on Norfolk Avenue

Indian restaurant displaced by a Bethesda development has found a new home just around the corner.

A favorite Bethesda Indian restaurant has re-opened in the Woodmont Triangle after being displaced by construction of a Fairmont Avenue high rise. Haandi has re-opened at 7907 Norfolk Avenue, in the former Uptown Deli space. The construction of a 17-story high-rise displaced the former Fairmont Avenue eatery, along with other Bethesda mainstays Sweet Basil and Foong Lin. Demolition at the high-rise project site is expected to begin soon. Foong Lin was recently re-incarnated as the House of Foong Lin in the former Moon Gate space, Bethesda Magazine reported. Haandi managing partner Madan Sundriyal told Bethesda Now he was glad to find a nearby location and had hoped to stay in Bethesda to serve his loyal patrons. Correction: This article …

I don't know what planet Joe is living on, but it isn't Earth! Haandi's food is FABulous! We've never been disappointed there, and often have been ecstatic about whatever we've ordered. Their Sunday brunch buffet (and weekday lunch buffet), which I hope will continue, allows a chance to sample dishes I might not have ordered from the menu. Good service and a pleasing ambiance too! Foodie News: DC Diners Trek to Montgomery—And Like It

Restaurants in Wheaton and Rockville get high marks from DC foodies, a Bethesda bar re-re-brands itself, cold weather shutters a popular Bethesda crepe stand and Bryan Voltaggio expands his empire in Chevy Chase.

Get caught up with the food scene in Montgomery County and adjacent Washington, DC, neighborhoods with 1 Meat, 3 Sides. This week, Montgomery County's growing recognition as a dining destination takes center plate. One meat: As we all know, DC's suburban food scene frequently outshines that of DC itself. But getting District-dwellers to dine out in the 'burbs is another story. Eater DC's special guide to dining in Wheaton should help with that. Tim Ebner reported that: [Wheaton is] a neighborhood strewn together by small businesses, many serving cheap, authentic and simple food. Walk a few blocks and there's a plethora of pupusas, dim sum, salteñas, ramen, gyros, cannolis, haggis, and sushi. Wheaton is a haven for the adventurous diner. …

Cold Weather Isn't Crepe Weather?

Freezing temperatures have caused Rita's Crepes to close temporarily.

Rita's Crepes has shuttered temporarily, according to a notice posted on the popular Bethesda Row crepe stand at Bethesda and Woodmont avenues. Consistent freezing temperatures have caused the stand's water lines to malfunction, according to the sign. "We will be back when things change," read the notice. The sign encouraged patrons to visit Rita's Crepes at the Bethesda Central Farm Market, held Sundays at Bethesda Elementary School from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.  The kiosk, run by Annandale resident Rita Douglass, has been serving up the sweet and savory treats to hungry Bethesda Row shoppers since 2009. Flavors include orange marmalade, maple butter, brown sugar and roasted almonds, and the savory vegetable Florentine crepe, filled with …

Wings Concept Dries Up; Live Music Planned for Former Box Space

The owner of the former Box Bar is headed back to Bethesda with a new live music concept.

The owner of the former Box Bar is back and planning a live music concept for the Old Georgetown Road space after a recent re-branding effort failed, according to blogger Robert Dyer and a Bethesda Now report. Dyer broke the news Wednesday that an effort to re-brand the former Hooters-style sports bar as a family-friendly eatery featuring Dry Fried Wings had gone south, with the restaurant appearing closed in recent weeks. Bethesda Now confirmed the news and reported that former Box Bar owner Jason McCarther bought the space back from George Farrell, the short-lived owner who re-launched the restaurant last month with a high-profile kickoff event featuring civil rights activists, Maryland Lt. Gov. Anthony Brown and former Republican …

I enjoyed the quite atmosphere of The Box about a year ago, however, it was obvious that they would not survive on a wing and a prayer, which consisted of a DJ a foosball table and nothing more. Over the course of just twelve months the interior conditions hit rock bottom (vermen, broken restroom fixtures, etc) which indicated the place had "jumped the shark". If Jason can address these issues …   more ›

Le Pain Quotidien Could Replace Tynan, PoPville Reports

PoPville, citing "a good source," reported that the shuttered Friendship Heights coffee and tea shop could become Le Pain Quotidien.

The former storefront of Tynan Coffee and Tea in Friendship Heights could become home to a branch of Le Pain Quotidien, Prince of Petworth reported on PoPville, citing "a good source." Tynan Coffee and Tea recently closed, Chevy Chase Patch reported. Its storefront anchored the southern arm of the plaza at The Shops at Wisconsin Place. Next door is the former storefront for Adolfo Dominguez, a clothing boutique. Patch readers made several great suggestions as to what might work well in the empty space. Suggestions included: an ethnic and/or mid-price-range restaurant, a craft beer or cocktail bar and an ice cream parlor.  What would you like to see in the old Tynan space in Friendship Heights? Tell us in the comments.

Range Now Serving Lunch

Bryan Voltaggio's Chevy Chase restaurant now serves lunch as well as dinner, seven days a week, but reservations still are recommended for both meals.

Range isn't just a dinner destination anymore. Starting this week, Range—celebrity chef Bryan Voltaggio's new restaurant, which opened in the Chevy Chase Pavilion last December—is open for lunch, too. Reservations still are recommended, and may be made online at www.voltrange.com or by calling Range at 202-803-8020, according to a restaurant news statement. The lunch menu is mostly the same as the dinner menu, with the addition of a burger and a $30 set-price lunch option, according to the restaurant.  Range now is open Sundays through Thursdays, from 11:30 a.m. to 10:30 p.m., and Fridays and Saturdays, from 11:30 a.m. to 11 p.m., at the newly renovated Chevy Chase Pavilion (5335 Wisconsin Ave. NW, Washington, DC). Range's menu is meat-…
