In Season at Hawkins Produce: Apples

The small market has a variety of apples that are great for baking.

Seasonal produce provides consumers with the best flavors and optimum nutritional value. Hawkins Produce, a town staple since 1979, offers a variety of in-season produce, mostly from local farmers and growers in North Carolina. "We like to keep everything in the family," said Joe Hawkins, owner of Hawkins Produce. This season it's the pumpkins, onions, tomatoes, sweet potatoes and apples – not to mention the plethora of reefs, firewood and Christmas trees – that beckon consumers to this local market. Their infamous apple cider, one of the first items they began selling in 1979, sells out regularly to this day. "Our apples are really good for anything," said Hawkins. New Generation at Hawkins Produce Hopes to Continue Family-Friendly Legacy

With the passing of the late Mr. and Mrs. Hawkins, Joe and his wife Rachel have high hopes to bring back the small-town vibe that preceded them.

Hawkins Produce, known for its apple cider and tomatoes, has been a staple in Kensington since 1979. But most importantly, they were known for their family-like atmosphere. Since the owners Jim and Ann Hawkins died in 1998 and 2001, respectively, the business just hasn't been the same. "It was just one huge, big family and we're trying to get that back," said Joe Hawkins, son of the late owners, and current owner of Hawkins Produce. Hawkins and his wife Rachel are the next generation of Hawkins and are working hard to revive the sense of family that existed when Joe's parents were alive, in particular during this holiday season.
