Memorial Day Weekend 2013 runs from May 25-27 and is the unofficial first weekend of summer. County schools are closed and many offices close to mark this holiday. While swimming pools typically open up this weekend, there are a number of other local activities that may interest you and your family. Rockville Hometown Holidays - This year marks the 25th anniversary of this popular weekend-long event which features music, food and family fun, culminating with a ceremony and parade on Monday. The rain held out just long enough Monday morning, as hundreds of people lined the streets of Kensington for the 44th Annual Labor Day Parade and Festival. Politicans, Cub Scouts and firefighters alike paraded through town, and families flocked to vendors and play-pens in Antiques Row. A light drizzle started not five minutes after the last float crossed Kensington Parkway, sparing the parade-goers a soggy Labor Day.

Floats, balloons, dancers, and First Responders thrilled the throngs of parade enthusiasts.
Warm feelings of holiday cheer washed over the crowd of people lining Ellsworth, Georgia and Silver Spring streets on a chilly, yet sunny Saturday to see the sights of the 13th Annual Montgomery County Thanksgiving Parade. As early as 8 a.m., people stood waiting in their winter coats, scarves, hats, and gloves to stake out their spots on the sidewalks of the parade route. Spreading out blankets, unfolding chairs and opening steaming thermoses of coffee, tea and hot chocolate, parade watchers tried to stay warm in the 40-degree weather. "We're from San Jose and aren't used to this cold weather," said Robin Hurwitz, who was in town visiting her sister. It is sad and tragic to me that we in Kensington, never do anything to honor our veterans from this town who served!!! I will be at the memorial park to have my own private memorial service for these brave individuals!!! Will anyone join with me next Monday @ 10:00 AM?
