Officials want to brand the county as a place to live and play for all ages.
Relaxing liquor laws, later last calls for bars and restaurants and more nightlife businesses around Metro stations are just some of the solutions a Montgomery County task force is considering to pump up the county's nighttime economy. Montgomery County Executive Isiah Leggett (D) addressed the 20-member group at its first meeting Monday in Silver Spring, Bethesda Now reported. While most people like the idea of improving the county's nighttime economy, they might not like what it means, Leggett said. Forty-two percent of people asked have an unfavorable view of the very hip, says a new poll.
A poll released by Public Policy Polling shows that a large percentage of Americans (42 percent) have an unfavorable opinion of “hipsters,” a group of men and women “unusually aware of and interested in new and unconventional patterns,” according to Merriam Webster. The Urban Dictionary says members of this subculture are “typically in their 20s and 30s” and “value independent thinking, counter-culture, progressive politics, indie-rock” and “witty banter.” Locally, data from the 2010 Census shows that only 19 percent of Montgomery County’s population is between the ages of 20 and 34. The amount of aid for county schools proposed by Montgomery County Executive Isiah Leggett in his fiscal 2014 county budget plan falls short of what's needed, Montgomery County Public Schools Superintendent Joshua Starr said Friday. Leggett's plan calls for a schools budget of $2.23 billion—an increase of $65.8 million, or 3 percent more than the budget approved for the current school year. "The County Executive's recommendation would fund 100 percent of the [school board]'s request," according to Leggett's budget proposal.
