The influences that made Burmese cuisine what it is today were established long before the political debate started over the country's name. The military government changed Burma to Myanmar in 1989, around the time Aung Myint and his family moved to America. They brought the comfort of home cooking with them. Downtown Silver Spring restaurant had humble beginnings as a donut shop in College Park.
More than a decade ago, a modest donut shop was transformed into a Burmese restaurant with a lot of family love and a little fear. Today, Mandalay Restaurant & Cafe is a place that still celebrates family closeness, taking chances and customer loyalty. "The people we have here are family," said Aung Myint, one of the owners. Mandalay is amazing. I've been a fan since they were located in College Park. Great vegetarian/vegan options, too. Try the ginger salad!   more ›
