And is being "hip" necessary to Montgomery County's future success?
Can suburban Montgomery County be made hip? County Councilman Hans Riemer reportedly believes so: "I really think that we are on the verge of a golden age in Montgomery County," Riemer said at a happy hour called "Can we make the suburbs hip? The future of White Flint," Bethesda Now reported. "The region that we are in is ... dynamic, growing, exciting... . ... But we have to and we are positioning ourselves in that region to capture that future growth," he added, Bethesda Now reported. The White Flint Sector (430 acres bounded by the CSX tracks, Montrose Parkway, Old Georgetown Road and the White Flint Mall) has been approved, so far, to be redeveloped with 2,220 residential units added to the existing housing stock of 2,321 units; 9,801 …

Seventeen years after establishing its presence on the Internet, Montgomery County has pushed to the forefront of digital governance in the 21st century with the launch of a four-platform website that officials say redefines how county government will interact with constituents. The launch of OpenMontgomery on Wednesday was coupled with landmark legislation that the County Council passed the day before, laying out a "digital roadmap" that will eventually give residents and businesses nearly unfettered access to online services and shared data, county officials said. "This really is the future," said County Councilman Hans Riemer, who helped spearhead the initiative. OpenMontgomery is divided into four portals: accessMontgomery …

At its first meeting, the new Wheaton Public Safety Work Group discussed how to counteract damaging perceptions about crime in Wheaton.
“Wheaton is not a dangerous place,” said Fourth District Police Commander John Damskey at the first meeting of the Wheaton Public Safety Work Group on Nov. 19. “But the perception is horrible," he added. The new Wheaton Public Safety Work Group is tasked with finding ways of “improving public safety, quality of life, and perceptions of downtown Wheaton as it relates to revitalization efforts." At the Nov. 19 meeting, attendees talked about the changes Wheaton has undergone. They also discussed improving appearance and safety in Wheaton with more street lights, cameras at pay stations and median landscaping. In an Aug. 8 memorandum, Montgomery County councilmembers Hans Riemer (D–At Large) and Nancy Navarro (D-District 4) outlined the work …

The county councilman has launched a petition urging the governor to replace members of the Maryland Public Service Commission.
County Councilman Hans Riemer (D-At large) of Silver Spring is calling on Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley (D) to replace members of the Maryland Public Service Commission, the state regulatory body that oversees Pepco and Baltimore Gas and Electric. Riemer has launched a petition at a MoveOn.org-sponsored website, The Gazette reports. The petition comes in the wake of mounting frustration with Pepco after the June 29 derecho storm, which left widespread power outages and tens of thousands of people in the heat and dark for days. Nearly 2,400 have signed on to the petition since it launched Friday at noon, Riemer said Monday night, speaking at a meeting of the Western Montgomery County Citizens Advisory Board. By Tuesday morning, nearly 2,700…

Adam Pagnucco cites votes on the teacher pension shift and income state tax hike as reasons for leaving.
Adam Pagnucco resigned last week after four years as the treasurer for District 18 Democrats. He cited the elected officials' votes on the teacher pension shift from the state to the counties, their votes "to make MoCo residents pay more than 40 percent of the state income state tax hike," and their inaction on raising transportation revenues as his reasons for leaving, according to an email posted by David Moon on Maryland Juice, which Patch confirmed with Pagnucco as genuine. Del. Ana Sol Gutiérrez was the only member of the Democratic slate--which also includes Sen. Rich Madaleno, Del. Al Carr and Del. Jeff Waldstreicher--to receive any praise from Pagnucco, for her votes against the pension shift and income tax hike. "Her votes deserve…
