A woman was followed by a man in a minivan and on foot in Chevy Chase, police said.
Chevy Chase Village police and Montgomery County police issued an alert Wednesday about several incidents involving men approaching young girls and women in Chevy Chase and Silver Spring neighborhoods. The latest incident happened near Kirkside Drive and Grove Street in Chevy Chase at 7 p.m. Tuesday, when a young woman said a man followed her in a minivan, shone a flashlight on her and then began walking quickly toward her. Hours before, in nearby Friendship Heights, police said a man driving a maroon SUV approached a 13-year-old girl. On Friday, a man made “inappropriate comments,” to a group of girls playing outside in Silver Spring, police said. The wait for Chevy Chase's new cigar lounge is nearly over: Civil Cigar Lounge will open in the newly renovated Chevy Chase Pavilion on Monday, Jan. 14. Chevy Chase's lineup of luxury clothing shops has a new, sporty arrival: DJ Bennett, an appointment-only, high-end sportswear boutique. Located in the newly renovated Chevy Chase Pavilion, the store, "which opened its doors in September, specializes in luxury athletic wear and equipment ranging from snowboarding goggles with built-in GPS capabilities ($450) to neoprene surf suits ($650)," The Washington Post reported. Gourmands and meat lovers, rejoice. Range—celebrity chef Bryan Voltaggio's newest restaurant—is set to open in the newly renovated Chevy Chase Pavilion on Tuesday, Dec. 18. Range's menu is meat-centric, offering menu items such as potted foie gras, rabbit, scrapple, pork shanks and cheeks, beef marrow bones, veal heart, veal sweetbreads and whole roasted rabbit, "hunter style." Shellfish options include oysters, shrimp, crabs and lobster. Fish dishes include rockfish and black cod with barbecued hazelnuts. But the less adventurous needn't worry. Celebrity chef Bryan Voltaggio's latest restaurant—once slated to open in mid-September—likely will open in a few weeks at the Chevy Chase Pavilion.
Good news for fans of celebrity chef Bryan Voltaggio: His much-anticipated new restaurant Range could be opening in just a few weeks in Friendship Heights, The Washington Post reported. While the restaurant's opening date is not yet set, patrons may reserve a spot for a "pop-in preview" on Dec. 15, 16 or 17, The Post reported. (Make reservations via the restaurant's website.) The restaurant once was scheduled to open in mid-September, but that date was pushed back to mid-November, Voltaggio’s publicist Melissa McCart told Bethesda Magazine in August. It's true—another high-end store has closed up shop in Chevy Chase. This time it's Adolfo Dominguez, the upscale clothing boutique from Spain. Friendship Heights' newest tenant will serve the wedding industry. WeddingWire—which produces a wedding-central website where brides- and grooms-to-be can build their own wedding planners and websites and shop for wedding accouterments (dresses, cakes, etc.)—is moving its offices to Friendship Heights, at 2 Wisconsin Circle (the building above the Metrobus station), CoStar Group (a real estate information company) reported last week. The wedding tech company's new 26,180-square-foot office will be located on the third floor of the 13-story, LEED Gold-certified building known as the Chevy Chase Metro Building. At 99, Marianne Arden Cook—who plays the piano at the Friendship Heights Village Center every Tuesday afternoon—is self-releasing a CD of her own music.
Releasing a CD of one's own music isn't just for kids. Nonagenarians do it, too. Friendship Heights pianist Marianne Arden Cook, 99, has self-released a CD featuring 15 of the 130 songs she's written, along with five popular songs. The CD sells for $20, Cook told Patch. The songs are "from a long time ago," but Cook just decided to release the CD now. "[I thought I could] sell some CDs and get some money," she added. Cook is well-known to many of her neighbors in Friendship Heights, where she's lived for the last 25 years, Cook said. For the last 10 to 15 years, Cook has spent Tuesday afternoons performing at the Friendship Heights Village Center. It's the end of an era in Friendship Heights: Chevy Chase Bridal—the only remnant of the legendary Harriet Kassman high-fashion boutique that closed in 2009 after more than 30 years of dressing Washington's socialistas—is holding its going-out-of-business sale. The liquidation sale starts on Friday, Aug. 17, and doors will close in October, Barbara Martin, a store spokesperson, told Patch. Closing sale discounts will start at 30 to 50 percent, and will get bigger as the closing date approaches.
