Here are some family activities you can do to foster environmentalism. Sponsored by Sony.
Very few events are celebrated around the globe, but Earth Day is. This year, it’s come and gone. But we’re here to ask: What can we do to show our love of the earth on that day, and every day? On May 31, Sony will release After Earth, an action-packed movie that takes place 1,000 years after cataclysmic events forced humanity to leave. It’s the kind of scenario that makes you want to donate to Greenpeace, recycle everything, and start biking every where, immediately. So, in honor of Earth Day, Patch has teamed up with Sony to present these ideas for making every day Earth Day. How can we make every day Earth Day? Begin with little things. Easy things. Obvious things. Things we take for granted each day, and use and/or abuse because of …

An Earth Day festival at Brookside Gardens in Wheaton, a large-scale celebration on the National Mall, and more.
April 22, 1970, marked the first-ever Earth Day. More than 20 million Americans participated in rallies, demonstrations and a variety of activities across the country in the name of raising awareness for a healthier, more sustainable environment. After witnessing an enormous oil spill in Santa Barbara, CA, Sen. Gaylord Nelson (D-WI) planned a national teach-in on the environment to educate the media about air and water pollution. Nelson partnered with Rep. Pete McCloskey (R-CA) and activist Denis Hayes to coordinate the event, which grew into Earth Day. Four decades later, Earth Day is ingrained in the national consciousness, with many groups, from schoolchildren to businesses, participating in events ranging from clean-up efforts, …

David Hauck says there are financial benefits to being energy efficient.

We chatted with him recently about Earth Day, Sunday, April 22. What are the biggest threats to the environment in Montgomery County? Hauck provided three: Stormwater runoff, invasive plants and climate change. What can Montgomery County residents do to mitigate those threats? "If you're a homeowner there are things you can do to make your home more energy efficient. Some of them are obvious, switching to more efficient light fixtures, CFLs, LEDs. Christ Church members volunteered along with the Friends of Sligo Creek volunteer group to pick up trash in the Glen Haven Park vicinity. While Christ Church volunteered in preparation for Earth Day, other groups are doing their part, too. Patch editors headed to Rock Creek Park to clean up the area and students and parents helped clean up Newport Mill Middle School's grounds.
It was students vs. teachers the night before at Newport Mill Middle school-wide basketball game. The next morning they, along with parents, joined forces in community service to improve their school.
For the first time Newport Mill Middle School combined its Parent Teacher Student Association meeting with a Tiger Green Workday. “This is part of a community builder,” said Panagiota Tsonis, principal of the middle school. “It builds a connection to the school community and continues to foster relationships within this community.” Tiger Green Workday is a day when students get involved in community service. “The goal was to help beautify the school grounds,” said Scott Harper, PTSA president. On Saturday, April 9 at 9 a.m., the intimate group started with a brief meeting in the parking lot to let students and parents know what was going on at school with each grade. Then local artist Jason Swain, a native of Australia and a current …
