A recently released simulation of planned Montgomery Mall renovations has some readers wondering why there are apparently no people of color in the video.
A recently unveiled video simulation of renovations at the Westfield Montgomery Mall has some Patch readers talking, but the discussion isn't about what the mall's new food court and cinema will look like. Rather, some commenters are asking why Westfield does not appear to include people of color in the animation. Westfield responded that no offense was intended. The video "flies over" the mall's expanded food court and the entrance to the ArcLight Cinema planned for the second floor. And, while the animated food court is packed with simulated shoppers, none of them appear to be of color, some readers said. The festival showcased four Montgomery County immigrant populations and held a Salvadoran-style cook-off for the best pupusa.
Montgomery County is home to many people from different cultures and the World of Montgomery festival, which took place Sunday afternoon in downtown Wheaton, showcased the county’s diversity through music, dance and food. “We are so proud to celebrate our cultural diversity,” Susan Jenkins, CEO of the Arts and Humanity Council, said. “We need to learn and respect one another and this festival helps us do that.” For its fourth annual celebration, the festival partnered with Kids International Discovery (KID) Museum to create an international village, with four large tents representing China, India, El Salvador and Ethiopia. The magazine ranked Bethesda and its surrounding environs as the 17th coolest metropolitan area in the country in a recent ranking. So, how to determine what's cool and what's not? Forbes used criteria including entertainment options per capita (using Sperling’s Best Places for help), recreational opportunities and green space, number of pro and college sports teams, cultural diversity, net migration, unemployment rates and median age. This is just a simple simulation to show the building layout. I am sure that when they get around to creating advertising for the new facility you will see a diverse crowd. Also, does "POC" not stand for Pirates of the Caribbean any more?   more ›
