State Funds Park Expansions in Montgomery County

Money for the parks comes through Program Open Space.

Montgomery County got the green light Wednesday to create and expand parks in Burtonsville, Aspen Hill and Fairland. Funding for the parks comes through Program Open Space, which is administered by the state Board of Public Works. The board approved the following Montgomery County projects for funding Wednesday, according to a statement by the Department of Natural Resources: Anne Arundel and Prince George's counties also received funding for parks. Gov. Martin O’Malley chairs the Board of Public Works, whose other two members are Treasurer Nancy Kopp and Comptroller Peter Franchot.

Maryland DNR Stamp Contest Open for Submissions

The contest runs until March 15.

If you're a hunter and an artist, then the Maryland Department of Natural Resources has two contests that can help you leave your mark on hunting badges across the state. The 17th annual Black Bear Conservation and 39th annual Migratory Game Bird stamp design contests are open and ready for submissions, according to the DNR. Artists can submit their original artwork for the contests through March 15.  The Department of Natural Resources will judge the contest entries on March 24 at the Patuxent National Wildlife Visitors Center in Laurel in conjunction with the 24th Annual Patuxent Wildlife Art Show.
