White Knuckle Parenting: Keep Your Kids Out of Costco

The new Costco is like a wonderland for my kids. Staunching the binge buying is going to take some effort.

Back when my kids were in diapers, my husband and I were Costco members and would head down to Beltsville every month or so to buy diapers, oranges, ground beef, and usually an impulse purchase or two. (Two dozen Sharpies in a rainbow of colors? Yes, please!) Side note: Have you noticed that everyone has an opinion on which is the best Costco? Side note to the side note: No one thinks it is the Beltsville location. Now that there is a Costco within walking distance of our house, we re-signed up under the premise that we could go there to buy just milk or just bread—or just 32 new acrylic drinking glasses. My husband is thrilled to be back in the land of bulk purchasing, but for my kids, who don't remember experiencing the joy of warehouse …

Ha! I know. I'm all responsible and don't let my kids eat 16 peanut butter cups in one day, but then I do. To protect them.   more ›

Foodie News: Costco's Kosher Dairy Bakery, Friendship Heights' New Eateries

Restaurant news from around Montgomery County and adjacent Washington, DC, neighborhoods.

Get caught up with the food scene in Montgomery County and adjacent Washington, DC, neighborhoods with 1 Meat, 3 Sides. This week, a kosher dairy bakery takes center plate. One meat: The Costco that opened earlier this month at the Wheaton mall includes a kosher dairy bakery, Wheaton Patch reported. What makes Costco's bakery different from the other kosher bakeries in the area is that it is dairy, instead of pareve. Pareve baked goods, because they are prepared without dairy or meat, can then be eaten at a meal with either dairy or meat, under kosher guidelines. "Following the same rules, Costco's dairy baked goods cannot be eaten at meals with meat, but its bakery is the only place nearby where you'll be able to find a kosher cheesecake…

Let the Shopping Begin! Wheaton Costco Opens

The membership warehouse store opened to a flood of customers at 7:45 a.m. Wednesday in the Westfield Wheaton mall.

After a delay of almost six months, the Wheaton Costco is open for business. Pat Fahey, the warehouse store's general manager, cut the ribbon at the entrance at 7:45 a.m. Wednesday, and a line of shoppers began streaming into the store, located in the old Hecht's location at the Westfield Wheaton mall. County Executive Isiah Leggett, whose office had announced that he would be cutting the ribbon, arrived shortly before 8 a.m. and the ribbon-cutting was re-enacted, holding up more shoppers who appeared impatient to get inside the store. Fahey said he decided to cut the ribbon earlier because "we have members who are waiting to shop." Montgomery County Councilmember George Leventhal (D-At large) also came to the Costco opening. "This is …

I would hope that the initial frenzy over a new Costco will die down, but let's remember as we are fighting mall traffice that MONTGOMERY COUNTY approved an exception against building additional parking spaces on account of the new Costco. Thanks, guys.   more ›

The store is really nice and has lots of products that other Costcos don't have. The preview on the 9th was very nice and the opening on the 10th was great. It's so nice to be only 5 minutes away instead of the half an hour or more it took to get to the other stores. And I'll still shop often at Giant and Safeway, because Costco has a limited product line. Surprisingly, there weren't a lot of …   more ›

I am glad there would be no gas station here. Have you seen the traffic it is causing at the Beltsville store site? This is even commercial area and still is very crowded with long lines all the way out to route 1. It would cause traffic jam in the Mall on Holidays and week ends. Even with out the Gas station will be crowded when Costco opens in a Week. You will see.   more ›

Planning Board: Costco Gas Station Does Not Fit with Wheaton Master Plan

A hearing examiner and the Board of Appeals will make the final decision on the proposed gas station's fate.

Costco should not be able to build a gas station at its new Wheaton location, county planners said Thursday night. In a 3-2 vote, after nearly six hours of reviewing a planning staff report and hearing testimony that at times became emotional, the Montgomery County Planning Board recommended denial of Costco's special exception application for the 16-pump gas station. The case next goes to a hearing examiner, who will take up Costco's application at 9:30 a.m. on March 11, 15, 18, and 22 in the Stella B. Werner Council Office Building, Second Floor Davidson Memorial Hearing Room, at 100 Maryland Ave. in Rockville. The Costco store is scheduled to open April 10 at Westfield Wheaton. Why the Planning Board Voted 'No' The Planning Board came …

The Big Egg

Commentous--that makes sense to me. It reminds me of how Congress used to pass laws from which it exempted itself. Classic do-as-I-say-not-as-I-do. I may be proven wrong, but I have a hard time believing that there will be a solely-office building here. Of course, adding a tiny snack store in the corner of the building that is geared at the office occupants will not be in the spirit of mixed-use …   more ›
