Silver Spring native Rebecca Sugar got her start at a Montgomery County high school arts program.
Rebecca Sugar draws. She tells stories. She composes songs on her ukulele. And, despite rebelling against the idea as a teenager, she has a point. She also has a bright future. When her new animated show, Steven Universe, debuts later this year, the 25-year-old Silver Spring native will become the first woman to create a show for Cartoon Network. Her original and versatile style and work as a storyboard artist on the Emmy-nominated Cartoon Network show Adventure Time earned her a nomination for “Best Storyboarding in a Television Production” at the 39th Annual Annie Awards, honoring the best in animation. Rebecca Sugar will become the first woman to create a show for Cartoon Network.
Silver Spring native Rebecca Sugar is making a splash in the world of animation. The storyboard artist, writer and composer has received praise for her work on "Adventure Time," an Emmy-nominated show on Cartoon Network. Forbes recently named her to its "30 Under 30" Entertainment list. Sugar graduated from Montgomery Blair High School in 2005 and participated in the Visual Arts Center at Albert Einstein High School. She received the Ida F. Haimovicz Visual Arts Award, which is given to a Montgomery County high school senior intent on pursuing a visual arts career. The Democratic National Committee held their 2012 Campaign Kick-Off Rally Wednesday at Montgomery Blair High School, giving the party a forum to engage constituents in the reelection of President Barack Obama and Maryland democrats in the 2012 election. Organized primarily by volunteers from the Montgomery County Democratic Central Committee (MCDCC) with assistance from other volunteers in Maryland, Virginia, DC and Pennsylvania, the event drew more than 1,000 people.
