Neelam Shaikh, a Norwood School student, incorporates themes from her Indian cultural heritage into her artwork.
Norwood School student Neelam Shaikh, 14, will become the youngest artist to show her artwork at the Yellow Barn Gallery at Glen Echo Park next month. Shaikh, of Bethesda, will be presenting her first collection of artwork there April 13 and 14, some of which draws on themes from her Indian cultural heritage. Shaikh's work includes an acrylic painting of a peacock, India's national bird, painted on a round canvas. A mixed-media self-portrait incorporates Indian green silk fabric, and another acrylic painting depicts and Indian Rajput woman and incorporates three-dimensional gems. A new blues and jazz music venue on Wisconsin Avenue will soon open its doors, and the club has announced which acts will be the first to take the stage. The Bethesda Blues and Jazz Supper Club is set to open March 1, and the musical groups lined up range from country to jazz to swing. Headliners announced on the club's website include Irvin Mayfield and the New Orleans Jazz Orchestra, Marcus Johnson and the Butch Warren Sextet. The Bethesda Blues and Jazz orchestra is also highlighted on the lineup. Country singer and Potomac native Maggie Rose will headline the club March 8 and 9. Twilight author Stephenie Meyer will visit Chevy Chase's famed independent bookstore Politics & Prose (5015 Connecticut Ave. NW, Washington, DC) from noon to 3 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 21. Five films from local filmmakers will be screened March 23 as part of the inaugural Bethesda Film Fest.
Get your popcorn ready. Five documentary shorts have been selected to be screened as a part of the inaugural Bethesda Film Fest, organized by the Bethesda Arts & Entertainment District. The five films were chosen from submissions by filmmakers across the Maryland, Virginia and Washington, DC region. The selection panel included Angelica Das, associate director of the Center for Social Media at American University’s School of Communication; Imagination Stage director of digital media David Stern, and members of the Bethesda Arts & Entertainment District Board of Directors. Nation's Capital features prominently in three Best Picture nominees.
Three Academy Award nominees for Best Picture prominently feature Washington, DC: Argo, Zero Dark Thirty and, of course, Lincoln. While serving as a location for major films is nothing new to Washington, DC, I can't think of another year in which so many DC-centric movies have been nominated. The Washington Post described each movie as "an engrossing, superbly crafted story that plunges viewers into otherwise opaque and unknowable worlds made distant by time, secrecy or both" and believe film attendees will be pleased that the films "enthusiastically celebrate institutions more often mired in dysfunction and public malodor." Bethesda and Potomac residents are among the local artists whose work is featured in this month’s Gallery B exhibition, and you can check out their work at an opening reception during Friday’s Art Walk. The January exhibition features artwork by Alice Kresse of Bethesda, Susan Tibolla Gray of Potomac, Patricia Affens of Olney, and Ceci Cole McInturff and Maya Ormsby of Washington, DC. Kresse is a graphic designer, art director and jewelry designer who recently returned to printmaking after a 30-year hiatus, according to a statement from the Bethesda Urban Partnership. Time is running out to see an incredible exhibition of haute couture gowns made of paper at the Hillwood Estate, Museum and Gardens. The exhibit's last day is Dec. 30.
Think paper dresses are for paper dolls? Think again. And think fast, because time is running out to see an amazing exhibit—"Prêt-à-Papier: The Exquisite Art of Isabelle de Borchgrave"—that runs through Dec. 30 at the Hillwood Estate, Museum & Gardens (4155 Linnean Ave. NW, Washington, DC), a historic house museum. The exhibit features 25 gorgeous, exquisite dresses—in all colors, and in styles ranging from 18th-century French court ballgowns to flapper frocks from the 1920s—all of which are made of paper. Accompanying shoes, purses, shawls and jewelry also are made of paper. Even the buttons and lace are made of paper.
