Antique of the Week: Carnival Glass Lemonade Set

Howard Avenue and its side streets are lined with shops specializing in antique furniture, rugs, vintage toys, used books and more. This large presence in the community sparked our feature, Antique of the Week, where we will showcase a different item or curiosity each week to bring attention to pieces from the past. This week, we're featuring a carnival glass lemonade set at the Antique Market III. Marsha Levin, one of the proprietors, favors these art deco glasses for their iridescent blue, which she said is a less common color found in carnival glasses than cantaloupe. This week, we are featuring a French style walnut chest of drawers at Antiques & Uniques. This week, we’re featuring an English Barbola mirror from the 1920s. Fran DiGregorio, the proprietor of Wisteria Antiques, said the mirror is handcrafted. It is beveled around the edges and has a gesso foundation. The back of the mirror is gilded, and the roses are hand-painted. It stands on an easel.  Barbola comes from a common term in …

This week, we are featuring an English secretary bookcase circa 1780 sold at Onslow Square. Sandra Ellington, the proprietor of the shop, said the secretary is composed of English mahogany with the secondary wood as oak and fine dovetails. This week, we’re featuring a philosophy book from 400 years ago, currently being sold by Hareth Jasim at History for Sale. Written by Salomon Glass, “Philologiae sacrae…” is roughly 990 pages and, according to Jasim, the book contains Latin, Arabic, and Hebrew.
