More than half of the county school system's graduating seniors last year earned at least one college-ready AP score.
News about the county's high-performing high-school students just doesn't stop. According to a Montgomery County Public Schools' statement, 52.3 percent of the county's public school students graduating from high school in 2012 earned a college-ready score (a score of 3 or higher) on at least one Advanced Placement exam, "far outperforming their peers across the state and nation." That's an increase of nearly 3 percentage points from 2011. Nationally, only 19.5 percent of graduating seniors last year earned at least one college-ready AP score. Maryland students have once again secured a number one ranking—this time in the number of students scoring a 3 or higher out of five on an Advanced Placement test. The state moved up from 27.9 percent in 2011 to 29.6 percent in 2012, the highest percentage in the nation, according to a report released by the College Board Wednesday. A total of 48.2 percent of Maryland students took the exam in 2012, up from 46.4 the previous year. Participation and passage are on the rise for black and Hispanic students.
More students are taking and passing advanced placement tests in Montgomery County Public Schools, and Albert Einstein High has shown an increase in minority test-takers, according to MCPS. For the class of 2011, the rate of black students taking AP tests rose by 24 percent at Einstein, and the rate for Hispanic students went up by 47 percent, MCPS reported. Those numbers stand out from the overall student population at Einstein, whose test-taking rate dropped from 65 percent to 62 percent. More black and Hispanic students are passing the tests at Einstein, too. While I have mixed feelings about the county's AP push, I agree that Einstein is an amazing school.The whole-school feel, the spirit, the open and welcoming climate,the excellent teachers, the synergy between strong sports, ambitious theater, the Visual Art Center, IB courses open to all, all encourage students to transcend traditional (invisible) boundaries, and thrive.
