The films are shown on a 20-foot by 40-foot screen on the National Mall between 7th and 12th Streets NW. Films are only cancelled if there is lightening. The annual event is hosted by Friends of Screen on the Green, in collaboration with festival sponsors HBO and Comcast.

Looking for something a little closer to home or offering a different genre of films? There are several programs running throughout the city and the nearby suburbs.

The Huffington Post DC compiled a long list of options in DC, Md. and Va. You can check out their full list here, but these options are closest to home:

Rosslyn Outdoor Film Festival: Fridays, June 8 — Aug. 24. This year's theme is "Election Night" and features classic political dramas and comedies like "All the Predent's Men" and "Dave."

NoMa Summer Screen: Wednesdays, May 23 — Aug. 8. Could 2012 be the "End of the World"? If you watch too many of NoMa's themed films this year, you might think so. Look for films like "Wall-E," "Ghostbusters" and "Independence Day."

Capital Riverfront Outdoor Movies: Thursdays, May 24 — July 26. The area near the National's Ballpark offers a theme of "adventure" this year. Watch movies like "Raiders of the Lost Ark" and "O Brother, Where Art Thou."

Bethesda Outdoor Movies - Stars on the Avenue: July 24 — July 28. For one week, each night you can catch a different film, including everything from "Vertigo" to "The Muppets."
