Whiz Kid: Tanya Silverstein

This week's Whiz Kid is a singer from Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School.

Every week, Kensington Patch will feature a local kid who has done something remarkable, whether at school, church or in the neighborhood. We want to hear about these amazing children and teens, and we will select one each week as the Kensington Patch Whiz Kid. This week's Whiz Kid is a singer from Bethesda-Chevy Chase.

  • Whiz Kid Tanya Silverstein, 15
  • Accomplishment: Tanya sings with the Jewish a cappella group, Marak Hayom, based at Congregation Beth El in Bethesda. She and her group opened for the Yale Whiffenpoofs, to an audience of more than 900 people.
  • Key to Awesomeness: Tanya was selected to join Marak Hayom (which means “soup of the day” in Hebrew) when she was a freshman in high school. It is a teen-directed a cappella group made up of 14 students from Montgomery County, which practices every Sunday morning. On Jan. 8, the group opened for the world-acclaimed Yale Whiffenpoofs, recently showcased on the TV show "The Sing Off." Tanya is also a member of the B-CC High School Women’s Chorus and rarely has a moment when she is not singing.
