Einstein Field Hockey Opens Playoffs Tuesday

B-CC, Walter Johnson and Holy Cross also ready for postseason.

The field hockey team has been named the eighth seed in the Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association 3A West playoff bracket, and will open the single-elimination tournament at home against ninth-seeded Tuscarora on Tuesday.

The winner of that game will face a daunting challenge in traveling to Carroll County to play first-seeded Westminster in the second round on Thursday.

The Titans won the Montgomery County 3A/2A East regular season championship in former Rockville coach Amanda Gordon's first season with the school, posting a perfect 3-0 record within the conference. Einstein beat Kennedy, Northwood and Wheaton by a combined score of 12-2 to earn the title.

The non-conference portion of their schedule did not go nearly as well for the Titans, with lopsided shutout losses to Blake, Churchill and Poolesville. Their only non-conference victory was a 3-1 road win over Seneca Valley on Sept. 12. 

Also in the MPSSAA playoffs, was named the second seed in the 4A West bracket. After a first round bye, WJ will host seventh-seeded Clarksburg on Thursday.

Bethesda-Chevy Chase was named the third seed in the 4A West bracket. They also received a first-round bye, and will host sixth-seeded Gaithersburg on Thursday.

The 3A and 4A State Finals will be held at Washington College in Chestertown on Nov. 11.

The , meanwhile, will enter the Washington Catholic Athletic Association field hockey playoffs as the first seed. They will receive a first-round bye and host a semi-final matchup on Wednesday.

The Tartans started the season slowly, and endured a pair of lopsided losses at the South River Invitational Tournament on Sept. 12. After that they went on a tear, winning nine straight games by a combined score of 21-0, with goalie Jill Genovese regaining the form that earned her a spot on the U.S. Junior National Women’s U-19 team.

Genovese will be playing at the University of Maryland next year, but first she is trying to go a perfect 4-for-4 in WCAC championships in her four years as the Tartans starting goalie.

The WCAC championship game will be held at the University of Maryland in College Park on Oct. 28.
