B-CC Hires Two New Coaches for Spring Season

Cari Huffman to lead varsity softball team; Marie Cornejo takes over co-ed volleyball

With the spring sports season less than two months away, has filled two head-coaching vacancies, promoting junior varsity softball coach Cari Huffman to the varsity position and hiring Marie Cornejo to lead the co-ed volleyball team.

Huffman, who teaches 8th grade history at , held assistant coaching positions at and Crossland high schools before spending the last two years leading the Barons' JV squad.

A 2003 graduate of Quince Orchard, where she played softball under coach Patty Truitt, Huffman went on to play for two seasons at in Rockville. In 2005 she was honored as the Knights' offensive and defensive player of the year and was also named to the NJCAA honorable mention team.

For Huffman, landing her first varsity head-coaching job fulfills a vision she has had since her high school days.

"I remember posting in the senior issue of The Prowler (Q.O.'s newspaper) that my dream was to be a teacher and a varsity coach someday," Huffman said. "It has all come true now."

Huffman recently endured the death of her father, Claude, and will be dedicating her first season as varsity coach to his memory.

"He introduced me to this sport when I was young," Huffman said. "And since then, softball has been a huge part of my life and will continue to be."

Cornejo played her high school volleyball under coach Diane Carnvale at Watkins Mill, where the Wolverines appeared in the state finals in 1996 and won the class 4A state championship in 1997. She was also on the Watkins Mill co-ed team that won the county championship in 1999.

She went on to play collegiately at George Mason University and in recent years has coached with the Montgomery Village Sports Association. She has also worked as a coach at the Francis Cornejo Volleyball Camp, which is now in its 15th year of operation. The camp is run by her father, who is the varsity volleyball coach at the in Bethesda.

While Cornejo will lead the co-ed team at B-CC, the coaching position for the girls varsity volleyball team in the fall season is still officially vacant.

"I am definitely interested in becoming the girls coach in the fall," Cornejo said. "Most of the girls who are returning are playing club, making this school a potential volleyball powerhouse. I'd love to be able to help take them to the next level."

Beth Radovsky, who began the 2011 campaign as girls varsity head coach, resigned early in the season and was replaced on an interim basis by former Seneca Valley coach Sue McPherson. McPherson then had to leave the team temporarily after the death of her father, with junior varisty coach Allison Koski taking over.
