KENSINGTON THEN AND NOW - A PERSONAL PERSPECTIVE
This is a personal retrospective of an appreciative individual for opportunities at one time which I never dreamed would be possible!
Growing up in Kensington in the fifties and sixties the town was quite small
and quiet with very few businesses that I remember. Citizen's Savings
at the time run by Mr. Rabnbit from upper Montgomery County was in the

tiny wooden building where Macon Construction is now housed. Ed Elliott,
my barber for many years was in what is now one of the many fine
antique shops. When mom and I would come to town for business it was

usually to pick up a few items from Mr. Victor's Store (now housing the Pen
Shop). They had just about everythihng imaginable except for hardware items like hammers, nails and saws which my dad would take care of
at Community Paint and Hardware in Bethesda. Almost anything you could imagine was readily available under Mr. Victor's eagle eyes. If we
needed to pick up a prescription, cough syrup or other sundry items it
was at the little drug store at the end of what is now the M&T Bank Bldg. My favorite item from this store was Atomic fire balls. Quite a few
years ago, an A&P food market was where Hardware City is now loated; before I turned six my brother and I went to a Clyde Bailey & Cole Bros circus. I liked the elephants and he tried to win green glassware for our mom. Later on the late sixties, early seventies, where
Hong Kong Restaurant is now located there was a laundromat. The bridge
over the railroad tracks where Carlos Auto Serice is located was one lane
and unpaved. The Warner Mansion was operated as a privately owned and
operated nursing home; before the concrete wings were added many years later. It was here where my grandmother spent her last days of
life in 1959. Works of mercy and tender care by a handful of elderly.
Throughout my years here I have seen many positive changes in this
community; sat and read books with my mom at Noyes library before
Kensington Park was built. I am Eternally filled with thanksgiving for being a oart of this commnunity which brings hope, joy and fulfillment to
many, many people.
