Plans for White Flint Mall Released

Owners aim to "de-mall" the shops and build a mixed-use space.

The owners of White Flint Mall submitted a sketch to the county last month, previewing what they plan to do with the large parcel.

In November, Lerner Enterprises and Tower Companies announced their intent to with residential, commercial and office space around a plaza.

The preliminary drawings show a mixed-use development, with most of the tallest buildings on the northwestern part of the property and a 2.1-acre public open space in the middle.

The designers were inspired by the Luxembourg Gardens in Paris, the Washington Post reported, and they plan to install recreation areas, a fountain and outdoor seating.

The Planning Department has received the sketch plan and is yet to schedule any hearings on the proposal, department spokeswoman Valerie Berton said.

I'm excited by the idea of this, since it seems to work well elsewhere farther up the pike. . . That said, I feel like the layout of a lot of the other Lerner properties leaves a lot to be desired in terms of traffic flow[0]. I hope parking is laid out in a safe way for pedestrians that also that doesn't also make the whole area a bunch of gridlock or an eyesore. The Fallsgrove shopping center is a good example of a Lerner property gone wrong (looks great from the street -- parking lot is a mess once inside). [0] Yes, I understand that on some level this is intended to bike, metro, walking accessible, but it is Rockville, and a lot of people will drive to it and need to park somewhere.

Born and raised in Rockville, I have not lived there in about 7 years....and I visited this past Christmas. It is absolutley horrible the way the have it built up. Way too crowded. I would not live there again if it was free.

It's so much better to have a Place people can relate to and even call home instead of yet another mall which White Flint has become over the passage of time. It can become another Edge City in line with Tyson's Corner instead of being part of an undefined slurb Steve

I believe this mall should be left as is and construct buildings around it a las tysons corner. town centers are appropiate for warm weather states but not for this area. Winter too call to walk outside summer can be hot and humid and i would rather be in a mall like montgomery mall or tysons with control temperature. it would be less costly that tearing everything down and build up again. now all you have to do is build around some nice office, apartment od condominium buildings.
