Pepco President Responds to Maryland Delegate

The cause of substation failure is still unknown.

, Pepco Region President answered several questions pertaining to the Kensington substation fire that occurred in late January. But one lingering question remains: What caused the fire that led to thousands of homes being without electricity?

Thomas H. Graham, region president, said that the cause of the fire is still under investigation in his response letter to District 18 Delegate and Kensington resident Al Carr.

"We continue to investigate what transpired at the Kensington Substation and will communicate the cause of the failure once we have a definitive answer," Graham wrote.

The 14 substation feeders serve communities in Kensington, Garrett Park, Wheaton and the Grosvenor area, Graham said, and after repairs, four feeders were switched back to their normal configuration and back in service the evening of Jan. 30. All of the feeders have been restored as of this time.

The substation, which was first placed in service on June 13, 1973, according to Graham's letter, . The substation failure along with nearly 5,000 downed wires left more than "180,000 customers in the Pepco Maryland service territory" without power.
