Kensington Council Establishes Development Review Board

Seven-person board will assess proposed development within town.

The Kensington mayor and council voted March 25 to establish a Development Review Board, to help the town comply with the new design guidelines.

According to Mayor Peter Fosselman, the board will review any proposed development or redevelopment in Kensington, as well as make recommendations to the mayor and town council as to whether the development fits the town’s historical character.

“With this board, people familiar with the town will be able to work with trained professionals to complete the recommended changes, while the professional architects and engineers can get a feel of what the town wants,” Fosselman said. “This way, representatives of the town can massage the plan to get early feedback to the developers and we don’t have to waste anyone’s time.”

The Kensington Sector Plan design guidelines, passed March 7 by the Montgomery County Planning Board, feature ideas to improve congestion and traffic, create public spaces and pedestrian walkways, and add new development in downtown Kensington.

According to Fosselman, the seven-member board will be appointed by him and approved by the town council. Membership will comprise of one town council member, one local business representative, one town resident, two members of the Kensington Revitalization Committee, and two professionals—either architects or engineers.

Fosselman said that he is still in the process of reviewing candidates and names of people who have expressed interest, and that he will probably send a complete list of his appointees to the town council in May, so that they can begin meeting this summer.
