UPDATE: Fosselman Re-Elected; Voter Turnout Up

Mayor Peter Fosselman won his fourth term in Monday night's elections.

 

(UPDATED, 10:48 a.m.) -- Voter turnout was markedly higher in the 2012 Kensington elections than in 2010, when the last mayoral election occured, said Susan Engels, Kensington clerk and treasurer.

A total of 556 ballots were cast this year, up from 379 in 2010. In last year's councilmember race, 519 ballots were cast, she said.

In total, five candidates vied for mayor and two councilmember seats.

Two incumbents -- Mayor Peter Fosselman and councilmember Sean McMullen -- held on to their posts in Monday night's elections, and newcomer Tracey Furman won the other, Engels said.

won what will be his fourth two-year term as mayor of Kensington, while McMullen won his third full term. also served four extra months when he replaced then-councilmember Del. Al Carr (D-Dist. 18) in 2007.

This was 's first bid for town council. She has lived in Kensington for 32 years.

Fosselman received 334 votes while , his only challenger, received 213, Engels said.

Furman received the most votes in the elections, with 336. McMullen picked up 326 votes, while former councilmember came in third in the councilmember race, with 277, Engels said.

All of the candidates answered that rebuilding the relationship between the town and the community in the wake of was their top priority.

"During my next term, I intend to focus on mending fences between differences of opinion and chaperoning our first redevelopment projects through the approval process," Fosselman wrote.
