Feeding Your Presidential Appetite

Local businesses help gauge the election through food and drink.

While choosing a candidate to vote for in the 2012 presidential campaign may seem daunting to some people, businesses in the area want to make sure that you are well-fed and well-caffeinated (and maybe even help predict the outcome) as you debate your selection.

  • The Romney Burger features lobster and hollandaise sauce.

California Tortilla

The popular Mexican restaurant has taken a slightly different tactic, honoring the candidates' personal lives:

  • The Obama Bowl is based on where he spent most of his childhood—Hawaii. The rice and grilled chicken are topped with snow peas, broccoli, carrots, red onion, pineapple, scallion, red pepper, bok choy and teriyaki sauce.
  • The Romney Bowl features Romney’s favorite birthday treat made by his wife. Freshly-made mashed potatoes are topped with Mexican meatloaf, sautéed vegetables, a savory sweet sauce, corn and salsa.

California Tortilla has locations in Silver Spring, Rockville, Gaithersburg, Bethesda, Olney, Annapolis and Potomac.

7-11

According to the Huffington Post, the 7-11 “7-Election” poll, which lets customers choose either a red cup for Romney or a blue one for Obama, has accurately predicted the last three elections.

According to the story, Obama is currently leading the “7-Election,” 60 percent to Romney’s 40 percent.

7-11 has numerous locations around Montgomery and Prince George’s counties.

Presidential cupcakes are available on special order through Nov. 7 from this Friendship Heights cupcake shop and coffee bar (at 1 Wisconsin Circle, Chevy Chase, MD). It was voted a Patch reader favorite.

For the special presidential orders, red elephant cupcake toppers and blue donkey cupcake toppers can be added to any cupcake/frosting combination, co-owner Todd Bracken told Patch.

There is no extra cost for the presidential cupcake toppers. Call (301-656-0809) or email the shop 24 hours in advance to place your order. (The minimum order consists of one dozen cupcakes at $29.50 per dozen, but there is no maximum number of cupcakes per order, Bracken said.)

Starting Monday, Oct. 29, the presidential toppers will be available on individual "happy!" (vanilla with chocolate fudge frosting) and "birthday!" (chocolate with vanilla buttercream frosting) cupcakes, priced at $2.75 each, at the shop, Bracken added.

As Bracken and his wife and business partner Michelle Snow Bracken posted on the shop's Facebook page, "we don't take sides here—we just make sweet treats for all sides."
