County Council Supports Zoning Amendment

The Kensington Town Council withdrew its support of the amendment at Monday's meeting.

The Montgomery County Council voted Tuesday to support zoning amendment 12-06, which would remove MARC stations as qualifying transit stations eligible for special benefits like reduced parking requirements, reported the Gazette.

Because of the town's unique circumstances, this amendment would only be applicable in Kensington.

, concluding that while MARC did not provide transit benefits equal to a MARC station, it did provide some transit benefits.

Kensington council members voted Monday to create a new transit category for MARC stations to allow builders some credit. Mayor Peter Fosselman said he will send a letter to the County Council and Planning Board requesting guidance in determining how much credit should be granted.

Increased parking requirements could lead to increased construction costs and less development in Kensington, said Councilman Han Riemer (D-At Large), but Councilman Marc Elrich (D-At large) said that developers were "...asking for something for nothing," if they wanted transit credit for building near MARC stations, reported the Gazette.
