Construction for the memorial begins April 2, 2011.
The will break ground on its 9/11 memorial on Saturday, April 2 at 2 p.m.
The memorial, which will be built on the northern side of the fire station at Connecticut Avenue and Plyers Mill Road, will be centered around a "16-foot, burned and twisted steel beam from the point of impact at one of the World Trade Center towers," according to a press release on the fire department's website. "It will also include a section of the limestone façade damaged in the 9/11 Pentagon attack."
The memorial will commemorate the lives lost in the Sept. 11 events and will show recognition to the Kensington volunteer firefighters who responded to the events that took place at the Pentagon that day.
