Report: Montgomery County Postal Worker Filed for Millions in Fraudulent Tax Refunds

Prosecutors say worker filed for more than $50 million in fraudulent tax refunds.

A U.S. Postal Service worker in Silver Spring is facing charges of requesting millions of dollars in fraudulent tax refunds and trying to get rid of tax debt and unpaid loans using bogus payments.

Federal prosecutors said Aaron H. Kelly submitted more than $50 million in “fictitious financial instruments” to the IRS and the Department of Treasury and requested more than $105 million in fraudulent tax refunds for 2006 and 2007, according to The Gazette. 

Kelly was charged with four counts of mail fraud, two counts of bank fraud, one count of corruptly endeavoring to obstruct and impede the IRS and two counts of aiding and assisting in the preparation of false tax returns, the Gazette reported, siting the indictment.

Kelly was arrested in Silver Spring on Tuesday and has since been released, the paper reported.
