Photo of the Day: A Boy and a Christmas Tree

Patch stopped by the Christmas tree sale at St. Paul's UMC and snapped a sweet moment.

Greg Kolf, 5, of Rockville bounded out of the family minivan Friday afternoon in hopes of selecting just the right Christmas tree. With his mother by his side, the choice was quickly made: a five foot tall Fraser Fir.

The sale was the 184th tree sold at the United Methodist Men (UMM) Christmas Tree Sale in the parking lot adjacent to in Kensington.

"I like coming over here," said Adele Kolf, a former Kensington resident and Greg's mother. "I feel good supporting [the church]."

John Scheirer, Venture Crew adviser to boy and girl scouts ages 14 to 21, said the sale started with 200 trees. Part of the proceeds are distributed by UMM to charities including local food banks.

Boy Scout Troop 439 joined in as well, selling pine roping and wreaths, Scheirer said, adding that the greenery and wreaths have since sold out. But the Boy Scouts will be on hand Saturday and Sunday to help sell the remaining trees.

While Scheirer and a helper securely tied the tree onto the Kolf's minivan, Greg Kolf observed, wide-eyed and excited. His mother said the family would trim the tree with multicolor lights and "Grandpa's decorations" dating from the 1950s.
