"Longing to Eavesdrop on the Conversation"

Ellyn Weiss

Ellyn Weiss’s encaustic sculptures evoke a sense of immediacy with their bright, bold palettes shaped into primordial forms. Upon intimate examination, however, these pieces offer a world of intricate details; reminding us that the most basic forms of life, while simple and self-contained, are the origins of infinite complexity. Through the processes of layering, folding, and excavating, Ellyn manipulates the encaustic to form sculptures that are reminiscent of biological structures. There is a sense of discovery in viewing these works: certain pieces seem to be primitive artifacts, some seem to have arrived from the cosmos, while others seem to be pulled from deep in the earth’s core. Ellyn will also be exhibiting encaustic works on panel that reference similar origins.

Ellyn Weiss is a painter and printmaker, curator, blogger and teacher, with studios in Mt. Rainier, MD and Truro, MA. Ellyn has shown throughout the DC area at McLean Project for the Arts, Athenaeum, Wohlfarth Gallery, Nevin Kelly Gallery, and Hillyer Art Space. Ellyn received a BA from Smith College and has studied at the Corcoran College of Art + Design. This is her first show with Adah Rose Gallery.

Randall Lear

Randall Lear’s paintings, sculptures, and installations blur the lines between all three disciplines. His playful palettes and compositions provide a glimpse into a whimsical space where graphic forms mix and mingle. Behind the whimsy, these works are grounded in deliberate processes that create architectural space and forms. The constructive nature of his works moves the paintings off the plane into the space of the viewer. Overall, Randall’s works blend elements of playfulness, happiness, and innocence.

Randall Lear is a painter and sculpture who has shown at American University Museum at the Katzen Arts Center, Forum Art Space, Purchase NY Unfettered, and Delicious Spectacle. He is currently a second year MFA student at American University with a BFA from Pennsylvania College of Art & Design. This is his first show with Adah Rose Gallery.
