Report: Beltway Speed Cameras Start Issuing Fines

WTOP is reporting that speeders between New Hampshire and University will get tickets in the mail.

The Maryland State Highway Administration is adding another wrinkle to the Beltway's vehicular Darwinism: active speed cameras.

The Beltway cameras between New Hampshire Avenue and University Boulevard started snapping photos of speeders Tuesday, WTOP is reporting, and any driver going more than 12 mph over the speed limit will be issued a $40 fine by mail.

The cameras surround the construction on the Northwest Branch Bridge, and the added enforcement is part of SHA's SafeZones program, WTOP reported.

Before yesterday, SHA used the cameras only to issue warnings.

Local blog Maryland Juice says implementing speed cameras is just the state attempting to cheat drivers. What do you think about the cameras?
