Metro on Fourth of July: More Trains, Fewer Buses

Buses will operate on a Saturday schedule for the holiday.

Want to know what a crowd of half-a-million people looks like? Take Metro on the Fourth of July.

The Washington, DC area transit system said that it's expecting no less than 500,000 riders on Thursday, July 4 and will run extra trains to keep up with the influx. 

Trains will operate at "near rush-hour" frequency from 6 p.m. to midnight to accommodate passengers traveling to the fireworks display on the Mall. 

In a holiday service alert, Metro advised passengers to avoid Smithsonian and Federal Triangle stations to get to the events, but rather exit at other stations and walk from there. Smithsonian will be entry-only once the fireworks are done. 

Metro suggests exiting at the following stations if you're planning to see the fireworks:

Bus riders will get the short end of the transit stick as a Saturday schedule and road closures will result in fewer buses, delays and "NextBus" estimates essentially rendered worthless.
