How to Avoid Hipsters, Find the Bacon: Yelp! Word Maps

If you've ever wondered where the epicenters of pasta, bacon and hipsters were in Montgomery County, now you know.

Something to generally consider about the Washington, DC region: For hipsters, go to H Street NE. For bacon, go Bethesda, and for yuppies, it’s Arlington all the way.

Yelp!, a website that rates local businesses based on user reviews, released a series of word maps for the Washington, DC region (inside the Beltway only, though). The maps look at how many time users use certain words in reviews, like “bacon,” “hangover,” “cocktails” and “cheap.” The areas where a certain word are used over and over are colored red on the map to denote that it’s a hot area for that word.

In Montgomery County, the map says to find bacon near the Bethesda Metro, find places described as “frat’ near the intersection of Old Georgetown Road and Woodmont and a teeny-tiny bit of “hipster” action in downtown Silver Spring, near Georgia Avenue and Wayne Avenue.

Not surprisingly, if you’re going looking for food described as “pricey,” Bethesda and Chevy Chase are the way to go, along with a smattering near downtown Silver Spring.
