Farmer John Hilker Offers Free-Range Eggs, Produce At Kensington Market

Hilker brings his produce from Pennsylvania to the Kensington Farmers' Market each week.

 

Every Saturday, farmer John Hilker drives from Rabbit Hill Farm in Spring Grove, Pennsylvania to Kensington Farmers’ Market.

Hilker leaves around 4 a.m. and arrives in time to set up and start selling his goods at 8 a.m.

His asparagus and spinach sell fast.

“You have to get here early if you want to buy them,” he said.

But, don’t worry if you’re not an early bird. 

Hilker sells plenty of other produce, including apples, potatoes, sweet potatoes, honey, eggs, and apple cider. His customers’ favorites are the Gold Rush and Pink Lady apples because they are tart with some flavor. 

He also sells Granny Smith apples and in the fall you can eat them raw. During the spring, he recommends cooking them.

Hilker said that his eggs are free range. He sells local, fresh apple cider and honey that is a mixture of local honey from all different seasons.

In a couple of weeks, Hilker will start to sell rhubarb and fresh strawberries from Virginia.  By mid-May, he anticipates selling strawberries from Pennsylvania.
