Communities Rally Around Breast Cancer Awareness

The White House got a pink glow in Washington, DC. People painted their pumpkins pink in Calvert, MD, and women donated art made of bras in Orange City, FL. In Pennsylvania, first lady Susan Corbett turned the fountain pink in Harrisburg. And they did it all last year in celebration of the 25th Anniversary of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

This October promises to bring even more colorful and thoughtful events and opportunities.

“Clearly, every person who brings attention to the cause is fantastic,” said Terry Music, chief mission delivery officer for the American Cancer Society.

• 13th Annual "Living with Breast Cancer" Symposium: "Facing the Road Ahead," Oct. 1, 8:30 to noon, at Suburban Hospital (8600 Old Georgetown Rd., Bethesda)
• Yoga on the Steps, Oct. 16 at 8:30 a.m., at the Freedom Plaza (at Pennsylvania Avenue between 13th and 14th streets NW, Washington, DC)
• Pink Rocks the Runway with Pink Jams, Oct. 21, in the atrium of the International Trade Center (1300 Pennsylvania Ave. NW, Washington, DC)
• Take a Bite Out of Breast Cancer with Pink Jams (throughout Washington, DC)
• Pink Fling, Oct. 2, at the Piney Branch Golf & Country Club  (5301 Trenton Mill Rd., Hampstead, MD)
