5 Things to Know Today: Dec. 16

Happy Friday, Kensington. We've made it to the end of another work week. Here are your five things to know today.

1. After mild temperatures Thursday, today will be mostly sunny in the morning followed by cloudy skies in the afternoon, according to ABC 7. Highs will be in the upper 40s with northwest winds 10 to 15 mph. Clouds will continue into the evening with lows around 30.

3. Nighthawks singer and harpist Mark Wenner is organizing harmonica workshops for the weekends of Jan. 13-14 and Jan. 20-21 at in Kensington. Wenner will be teaching beginner and advanced classes. Contact Scott Stancill at 301-942-1717 or stancillsguitar.com.

4. In the market for a Christmas tree? Boy Scout Troop 439 is selling Douglas, Fraser and Canaan firs today through Sunday, Dec. 18, at on Armory Avenue in Kensington. Hours: Friday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Saturday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.; and Sunday from 11:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

5. On this day in 1773, a group of Massachusetts colonists impersonating Mohawk Indians boarded three British tea ships and dumped more than 300 tea chests into the Boston Harbor. The raid, known as the Boston Tea Party, was in protest of the Tea Act of 1773, legislation intended to salvage the failing East India Company. The "direct action" was a defining moment in the lead up to the American Revolution.
