JennyCakes To Offer Sweet and Savory Baked Goods

The bake shop is hoping for success in Itsy Bitsy's old space.

Jenny Smith has been baking cakes for years for friends, family and neighbors out of her Kensington home, but now she's hoping to expand into a commercial kitchen and will be selling her treats to strangers, too.

Smith decided to take her homegrown business to the next level after she heard Itsy Bitsy Bakery would be closing its door at the beginning of the year. Her daughters encouraged her to take over the space.

Now she's only a few weeks from opening the doors to her first business and she's naturally a bit nervous.

"I'll be really nervous on the first day, when people first step in the doors," Smith said.

She'll have chairs and tables set up so people can relax, enjoying both sweet and savory baked goods - from cakes, to breads like challah and Italian bread— and coffee.

"My cakes aren't big on decoration," Smith said, "it's more about the flavor."

But, Smith is taking classes to learn more about decorating cakes in an effort to make them look more like those being sold mainstream.

The business will run with the help of Smith's mother and her four children, she said.

The store is set to open April 5. Smith will continue to take orders for cakes at jenny@jennycakesbakery.net.
