Chipotle Slated for Kensington

Chipotle is moving into Kensington Shopping Center.

If a Kensington resident wants a burger and soda on the run, the nearest fast food restaurants are in Wheaton or Silver Spring. But come October, Kensington will get a new fast food chain.

Chipotle Mexican Grill will move in to the Kensington Shopping Center and residents can finally enjoy a burrito bowl, tacos or chips and guacamole to dine in or take on the run. The restaurant is slated to open "in late October, but doesn't have a firm date yet," according to Chris Arnold, a PR representative for Chipotle.

When it comes to grabbing lunch, the non sit-down or fast food-type of restaurants are sparse. Donut King & Queen's Grill and Continental Pizza are one of the few options for residents to grab food and go. Back in the late 1980s and early 1990s, a Roy Rogers was located where Savannaha's currently sits, and more recently a Pizza Hut was located where Chevy Chase Bank is now. The president of the Kensington Business District Association said that the addition of Chipotle is good for the community, since there aren't many options in town.

"Anything that offers more services to the residents is good," according to Dennis McCurdy, president of the association."

Continental Pizza, which has been in Kensington for more than 40 years, is just two doors down from the future Chipotle. Lunch and dinner are busy at Continental, but what will happen once Chipotle moves in?

Management of the pizza place didn't want to comment at this time, McCurdy doesn't think it will be an issue for the restaurant.

"I think the world of the store," McCurdy said of Continental pizza."I don't think it will affect their business at all. It will just bring more people to the shopping center."

One complaint of residents is that there aren't enough options in the neighborhood, but McCurdy said it seems like that is about to change.

"It's good to have another business to bring more people in and to keep people in Kensington," McCurdy said.

Correction: In an earlier version of this story, we omitted that previous fast food-like restaurants such as Roy Rogers and Pizza Hut were located in Kensington. We regret the error. Thanks to users Jill Gallagher and Ray Brisbane for bringing it to our attention.
