Bites Nearby: Parkway Deli and Restaurant

You could stand on a corner and look around until a restaurant sign draws you in. But we've got a better idea. Each week, Kensington Patch picks a great restaurant either in town or nearby that is worth checking out. Here's this week's choice.

Do you remember the old Quizno's subs commercial with the Spongmonkeys? In it, the weird creatures tunelessly but lovingly sang about the Quizno's pepper bar.

I bring up this random piece of pop culture because when I wax on about the , I hear myself Spongmonkily singing to friends, "They've got a pickle bar!"

And that pickle bar is almost as delicious as the sandwiches. And the milkshakes. And the onion rings. And the breakfast syrup vehicles.

Don't believe me? Check out the line on Sunday mornings at about 11 if you would like concrete proof that this deli is delectable.

The corned beef and pastrami Reuben, the tuna melt, the coleslaw, the orange crumb French toast. It's tough to choose a favorite dish. For me, usually a sandwich which can be augmented by the presence of the glorious pickle selections wins out.

This down-home diner has been pleasing patrons for over 47 years. But you don't have to enjoy the goods at the tables or booths. The Parkway Deli is also one of the most popular caterers in the area, providing popular smoked fish, bagel and dessert platters for Washington-area home gigs.

If you have kids, pop in between meals for a quick bagel or rainbow cookie before heading to a playdate at Candy Cane City or a bike ride in adjacent Rock Creek Park. Eat inside or at one of the outdoor tables.

If you're entertaining out-of-town guests and don't feel like bringing the (eggs) Benedict, jump in the car and treat them to the Parkway instead. Don't be surprised if they visit again VERY soon.
