Bites Nearby: Black Market Bistro

Kensington boasts dozens of restaurants, with cuisine hailing from all over the globe. Each week, we'll pick a great restaurant either in town or nearby that's worth checking out. Here's this week's choice.

Nearby Garrett Park is full of gorgeous houses, historic buildings and beautiful landscaping. Many people simply pass through it as a way to get to The Pike, without giving it much thought.

But just a few turns off of Strathmore Avenue, in the Post Office on Waverly Avenue, is one of the area’s best restaurants—Black Market Bistro.

The restaurant is a perfect choice for an intimate meal for two, or a group of 10, but plan far in advance or arrive early, because they only take a limited number of reservations and it's very busy most evenings and weekends.

The menu selections are interesting and ever-changing, with one constant: fresh ingredients in often unique combinations are the norm here. Salads, seafood, Italian-style pizzas, beef and grilled veggies are menu regulars, with specials changing on a frequent basis.

My personal favorite is the Addie’s style Prince Edward Island mussels (which is technically an appetizer, but the generous portion is really enough to satisfy!).

The true star of Black Market Bistro is the wine list. Unexpectedly large and diverse, the list is atlas-like—ranging from California to South Africa, France to Argentina and virtually any other location you can think of. And for a real treat, visit on Mondays, when selections from the list are offered at half-price.

So the next time you are driving down Knowles and Strathmore as you head over to Rockville, consider turning on Kenilworth, veering off on Waverly and stopping by the Black Market Bistro.

4600 Waverly Avenue, Garrett Park. Monday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 11:30 p.m.; Sunday, 10 a.m. to 10:30 p.m.
