Antique of the Week: Hungarian Storage Bench

Vintage Hungarian storage bench is perfect for storing linens and as a bench for a long, wooden table.

As everyone in Kensington knows, Antique Row is one of the community’s points of pride. Howard Avenue and its side streets are lined with shops specializing in antique furniture, rugs, vintage toys, used books and more. This large presence in the community sparked our feature, Antique of the Week, where we will showcase a different item or curiosity each week to bring attention to pieces from the past.

This week, we’re featuring a Hungarian storage bench from 1887, as inscribed on the back. Alan Robson, one of the proprietors of , said it is comprised entirely of pine. Because the back of the bench has floral decorations, he said it served as a wedding gift. Often, the names of the newlyweds are inscribed on the bench, Robson said, but not for this bench.

The seats lift up to be used as storage for linen.  The measurements of the bench are 118 inches long, 16.5 inches deep, and 28 inches high to the back.

The bench was created during the surge of nationalism in Hungary, which was known as Austria-Hungary during the 1880s.  This bench symbolizes a prosperous era in Hungarian history. Hungary was experiencing the benefits of the industrial revolution and establishing its Hungarian heritage.

It's on sale for $2,450 at The Great British Pine Mine. There is a summer sale going on now until the end of June where you can purchase this bench for 20 percent off its original price. The Great British Pine Mine is located at 4144 Howard Avenue. Their office phone number is 301-493-2565.
